How to Choose the Right Social Media Platforms

Being on every platform is a fast way to be mediocre on all of them. Here is how to decide where to focus.

The instinct when starting social media is to claim a profile everywhere. The problem is that each platform has its own format, rhythm and audience expectation, and spreading a small team across all of them usually produces thin content on every channel.

Start with your buyer, not the platform

Ask where your customers already spend attention and how they make decisions. A visual, impulse-friendly product behaves very differently from a considered B2B service with a long decision cycle.

Match the format to your capacity

  • Video-first platforms need consistent production capacity, not occasional bursts
  • Written platforms reward expertise and point of view more than polish
  • Visual platforms need a coherent look, which means a design system
  • Every platform rewards consistency over intensity

Two done well beats five done badly

Pick the platforms you can sustain. Publishing steadily on two channels builds far more recognition than sporadic posting across five, and it gives you enough signal to learn what your audience responds to.

Decide what social is responsible for

Social media can build awareness, demonstrate expertise, support recruitment, handle service questions or drive direct enquiries - but not all of those at once with equal weight. Decide the primary job, then judge the results against that job.

Consistency compounds. Intensity fades.
